Why is hair oiling important

What is hair oiling?

Hair oiling is a treatment process for your hair whereby you use a combination of oils and apply them onto your scalp and hair. This is done to help damaged hair replenish again, regrow hair that has been lost, strengthen hair follicles and add hydration and shine to hair again.

Why should we do hair oiling?

Naturally with age, our hair quality can deplete. This is due to a variety of reasons such as hair damage caused by chemicals and minerals in water. This damages your hair by causing your hair to become dry, have breakage and thin at your follicles.

Hormonal changes play a big part in your hair such as during pregnancy, ageing and illnesses. It is normal to lose between 50-100 hairs a day because your body continually grows new hair and sheds old hair. This rate stays stable throughout your life but hair growth declines hence with age you do have reduced hair and you get hair loss. Certain illnesses cause hair loss for example thyroid problems can affect hair because thyroid hormones are essential for production of keratin. Low levels of thyroid hormone cause dry and brittle hair due to lack of the keratin.

Due to these numerous factors, it is imperative for us all to incorporate oils into our hair to keep it healthy and nourished. Depending on the oils used, they add different benefits to your hair for instance coconut oil strengthen hair fibres, argan oil hydrates hair due to its high quantity of fatty acids and vitamin E oil increases blood circulation which stimulates and increases hair growth.

Will I see changes with hair oiling?

There isn’t a one off hair oil solution. You have to remain consistent with oiling your hair in order to see the benefits of the oiling process. By oiling your hair regularly, you keep your hair roots and scalp rejuvenated at all times. Especially for people with dry hair, your hair naturally lacks in natural oils hence you should oil your hair more often.

The recommended frequency to oil air is 3 times a week. This keeps your hair healthy, locks in the nutrients and vitamins your hair needs without clogging your hair follicles. Excess hair oiling can potentially clog your hair follicles so it is best to maintain a balance as with anything in life and oil your hair up to 3 times a week.

By adding oils into your hair, its normal to see positive changes to your hair over time such as stronger hair follicles, hydrated hair making it appear more shiny and less dull, and thicker voluminous hair due to hair growth and the replenishment of vitamins and nutrients locked into the hair from the oils.

How to do hair oiling?

There are a few ways you can oil your hair, it really depends on your preference. If you prefer to have a shower or bath and like to put products in your hair, you can put a few drops of hair oil from your mid hair to ends of your hair. Comb the hair oil through your hair with your fingers or a comb. This keeps your hair feeling hydrated and not greasy, heavy or weighed down due to not putting too much hair oil in and not at the scalp/ root area.

The most effective way of hair oiling is massaging a few drops of oil into your scalp and hair roots, and massaging the oil down through your hair, then leaving overnight or for a few hours before washing off with shampoo. This is the most impactful way as the hair oil locks into the hair follicles, scalp and hair, giving it time to rejuvenate your hair.
