TLDR : The short answer is that a healthy scalp will result in healthy hair – focus on your scalp and your hair will follow as you need to start from the root up.
What argan oil doesn’t do is magically restore hair, but it definitely helps your scalp become healthy again. A healthy scalp will create the right environment for hair to grow healthily in, whilst a a dry, flaky, damaged scalp will only allow for dry damaged hair to grow in.
Now, hair growth does depend on things like your health and hormones, but scalp and strand health majorly contribute to how good your hair looks and feels e.g. if your hair is weak and suffers from breakages it could limit hair growth.
So is argan oil good for hair growth?
Here are a few of the common issues we all find ourselves in when it comes to our hair health:
1. “My hair breaks before I have a chance to grow it.”
Does it feel like your hair never gets past a certain length? We always think that our hair just stops growing at a certain point, but most of the time that isn’t the case.
What you are facing is a breakage issue, which is literally when your hair strands just breaks, resulting in an uneven, thin and dry look.
To combat hair breakage, you need to strengthen the hair strands and repair the hair cuticle (this is the outer layer of each hair strand). By doing so you will get back to smoother and shinier hair.
Now argan oil contains vitamin E and fatty acids, both of which help to restore elasticity (your hairs ability to go back to normal after being pushed and pulled instead of just breaking) as well as sealing split ends. This sealing helps to make each strand more resilient to brushing, and locks in moisture which is important for hair and scalp health.
2. “My scalp is flaky or super oily—sometimes both!”
A lot of women have to deal with an imbalanced scalp – it is normal, signs of an imbalanced scalp is when you go from dryness and itchiness to very oil and greasy. Both get in the way of healthy hair growth.
Argan oil has natural anti-inflammatory properties (soothes your body’s reaction to irritation) and anti-oxidant properties (the compounds that protect your scalp and hair from damage, a bit like sunscreen).
These natural properties help to regulate your scalps own oils that it secretes (yes, your scalp releases its own oils!), balancing your scalp, without any blocking of pores as argan oil is lightweight, whilst nourishing and repairing the skin underneath your hair.
3. “My hair just feels thin.”
Thinning of the hair can be frustrating and can feel like it is unstoppable, whether that is near the hairline or when your hair is parted. It can be a result of a number of things including diet, stress and hormones.
Now as mentioned already, argan oil won’t magically regrow hair, however, if you regularly massage the oil into your scalp it can boost blood circulation, getting vital nutrients to your hair follicles and roots so that they stay active and strong which helps to reduce breakage and get your hair growing consistently.
Remember, strong hair growth is the result of a healthy scalp.
Whilst argan oil will NOT cause new hair strands to start shooting through your scalp, it can definitely help to create a healthy environment for your hair to grow in. This makes a difference if you are already dealing with dryness, inflammation or breakages.
Argan oil helps to rebalance your scalp and is a good way of resetting things so that over time (at least 3 months) not only does your hair become more manageable and hydrated, but its shininess and volume is restored.
